I found the Hotel de Ville to be a very comfortable and well located hotel in Groningen. However, it is more expensive than similar hotels in Groningen. My husband says that the Eden City Hotel is very similar, though I have not stayed there. We paid ? 125 per night at the Hotel de Ville and the City Hotel is considerably less expensive. I have absolutely no complaints about the Hotel de Ville, other than the price, but if I were to go to Groningen again, I would probably try some of the less expensive options.

Stayed overnight midweek on business at the hotel was just great for that purpose. Fast and friendly check-in, Nicely decorated and furnished clean room with a great shower and a good bed. Good service, fine breakfast. The location is central enough that I was able to stroll downtown for dinner, so I didn't use the restaurant.

The Hotel de Ville's design and general condition get short shrift in the entries posted here. This is a well designed (modern, with just a bit of Starckian whimsy) hotel which joins three buildings of different eras seamlessly in an L around a long and narrow courtyard (with covered and outdoor lounge areas.) The room I was given on the third floor was the nicest I've had at that price point in Europe, with a door to a shared balcony and a generously sized, well-designed bathroom.
I can't imagine driving in Groningen. It's flat and compact, and bicycles will get you anywhere you can't go by train. The hotel has bikes to borrow, but you can also rent at the train station, and park the bikes overnight in the hotel's rack (a bit tricky to locate, down an alley).
Can't speak to the breakfast, which was pricey. The nearby Grote Markt and Vismarkt have lots of bakeries and cafes.

We booked this hotel as it looked to be the best in Groningen and wasn't too expensive (€100 per room per night). The hotel is perfectly located just a minute or two walk from the main streets. The decor of the reception, lounge etc is beautiful and as we were there when it was very cold they had a log fire buring in the lounge which was lovely. The staff on reception were very friendly and helpful with any enquiries. Our room was a double over looking the outdoor terrace. It was lovely and big but could definitely do with some updating. There is a restaurant attached to the hotel which looked great but sadly we didn't eat there. The buffet breakfast served in the mornings was delicious and had a good selecion of hot and cold food. Overall it is a great hotel.

We just stayed for 4 nights with another couple at the Hotel de Ville. FANTASTIC Groningen location. Upscale front desk service. The Valet Parking was speedy and worked well for our needs. Rooms are designed for the Tall Traveler...bathroom mirror quite high...
The offered ear plugs in the room to cut the noise...It's in a busy area...which means so much to do within walking distance. Fantastic shopping and history ...right downtown...
