"Stayed one night at Craxton Wood on our way travelling South. It had been booked for about 2 weeks. I have no complaints at all other that they were more than a bit slow serving breakfast! Was in the dining room an hour and all I wanted was cornflakes and tea! All staff were lovely and very professional..."

We stayed at the hotel as a wedding guest. The wedding was fabulous and we had a lovely day. However when we tried to book to get a discounted rate as part of the wedding party we were told that their allocation was full and that we would have to pay full price ?146 for B&B in Executive room. As it was also Chester races we were told they were full up and couldnt discount the rate. However when I double checked this they still had rooms available, which I thought was unreasonable and they were unwilling to budge! Bar prices are extremely high - ?8.75 for a glass of Sav Blanc! Even the bar staff laughed at the prices. Room was distinctly average but clean. However double bed small and was like sleeping on a bouncy castle! Breakfast good with plenty of choice. Overall - Average hotel and overpriced

This hotel is in good surroundings. The room was very clean and spacious and the hotel building is nice. The staff are good just a bit too helpful sometimes. So i would recommend staying here except for one thing. The dinner. As others have said below dinner served here is expensive and with small portions. We were tired after a long drive and ate because we were too travel weery to go out again. I wish I had. I left the hotel restaurant hungry and feeling ripped off. There is a brewers fayre just down the road which might have been basic but at least I would know what I am getting. Breakfast was standard. Although again with portion control. my smoked haddock was tiny. But this is a good place to stay and I would go back but eat elsewhere.

Had a very enjoyable 1 night stay. Hotel 4 star rating is accurate with good facilities, very good staff and a decent sized well appointed room. We paid ?68 for a standard double and this represented good value with the use of the adjoining leisure facilities. There is a good sized car park and the hotel is set on the outskirts of Chester in lovely, well maintained grounds. Only minor faults were that the room we had (110) did not have air-conditioning, not a problem in March but would assume it could be a little uncomfortable now that our summers are becoming more hot and humid. There was also no safe in the room, although you could leave valuables in the hotel safe. The biggest disappointment with the hotel was the evening meal. First of all we found the service to be a little too fussy and formal. The food itself was good but the portions were very small considering the price. My wife ordered pork and there was barely more than three mouthfuls. I ordered braised beef and again the portion was too small for me. Another surprise was that the potatoes, chips and vegetables had to be ordered and paid for seperately. All in all, a 1 course meal with two drinks came to nearly ?60. In conclusion, we would definately recommend this hotel but for us we would only stay in the future on a room only basis.

FABULOUS FOOD!!!!!!!!!!!

I stayed at the Craxton Wood for a weekend break with my friend. We booked a family room which was huge - it had a big double and also a single bed, along with a seating area, large clean bathroom and a lovely view of the gardens. We booked a dinner, bed and breakfast rate and when we went down for dinner, the waitress took us into a very grand and silent dining room, and seated us at a large round table - this was very uncomfortable for both of us - we wanted to have a nice relaxing intimate dinner to catch up, but found that we couldnt do that as we were about 2 meters from each other in the middle of the room. I ordered soup, lamb and ice cream. My friend ordered scallops, beef and icecream. My food was lovely - my friends food was OUT OF THIS WORLD!! He said it was the nicest meal he had ever eaten, and usually he is pretty fussy!!! The atmosphere in the dinning room was so bad that we asked if we could take desert up to our room- they were happy for us to do this (they charged ?5 to our room for tray service!!) and i have to say it was the most amazing icecream i have ever tasted - it was out of this world!!!!!!!!! The chef does a fantastic job, and the restaurant would be packed every night for the food - it was just really let down by the atmosphere. Breakfast next morning was the same - lovely food but very stuffy atmosphere. We are both in our early 30's and enjoy having breakfast and reading the papers on a sunday morning but there was no chance of this as we felt completely out of place. Overall i would say Lovely hotel, fantastic room, amazing food - just real shame about the atmosphere!!!!
