I spent a week at the Mitland while working in Utrecht during the summer. My initial impression was very negative, although things did improve over the course of the week. A large chunk of the hotel was in the process of having its dated balconies demolished. And the air conditioning was out of order, not to be fixed for weeks. The week was mostly warm and humid, and it could get rather unpleasant in the rooms, with minimal ventilation (the door to the about-to-be-demolished balcony was locked). Also, in the wing that's under construction the wireless internet service that I had paid for was very unreliable indeed - if I sat in the hallway by my door I stood a slightly better chance of a signal. After a couple of days I complained and got an apology but no help; after further complaining I was moved to a new room in a different part of the hotel. Still too hot and sticky, no functioning air conditioning, but with much more relief from the heat ... and well-functioning internet. When I needed to work and it was too hot in my room, I was able to take refuge in the lobby area. In most other respects the hotel was pleasant enough. If you're in a room on the side of the pond/farm (other side is the Utrecht ring road) it's quite a pleasant location. Showers in the rooms are quite good. Staff is friendly. Breakfasts are fine - and with the possibility of eating out on the large deck next to the pond. The place looks like it was quite attractive in the 1970s or thereabouts.

A child of Dutch immigrants, I took my wife, son and sister-in-law to the Netherlands to show them the country I visited many times as a child. I selected the Hotel Mitland in Utrecht due to the central geographic location in Holland -- midway to everything. First impressions were great. The staff was very efficient and polite. Our KLM flight arrived early in the morning, so our room wasn't quite ready. It was colder than we anticipated for early July, so we decided we needed to purchase jackets for everyone. The desk staff secured our luggage and provided us directions to the nearest public transportation. By the time we returned, our room was ready, and it was very nice. The Suite provided comfortable beds all of us (two teenagers [14 & 18] and my wife and me). There was a kitchenette that we planned to use but never did because we ate in the towns we visited or in the delicious restaurant. The kitchenette was well stocked. The room also had a small balcony that looked over a small peaceful lake and the remnants of an old fort. The bathroom was clean and had very modern fixtures. My wife is still looking for a comforter to match the one on our bed. (Please remember, this was a cold July, so we were quite comfortable in the room. There is no air conditioning, however, so I can imagine that it may get pretty warm when the weather turns hot and humid.) The restaurant service was terrific. Breakfast each morning included a variety of items to choose from, and a cook was available to prepare fresh omelettes. Lunch and dinners were delicious as well. One of my favorite Dutch snack foods are bitterballen (probably not the spelling) and this restaurant serves the best. There are two bars, and the service at both was good, as well. Every morning the employee working at the front desk was extremely polite and asked about our day's plans and suggestions were offered. There is a beautiful pool that overlooks the small lake, and the pool is clean and nice. We enjoyed swimming there, but didn't take advantage of the other available facilities such as the hot tubs or sunbeds. Speaking of things we didn't use, there is also a bowling alley. We had no time for bowling, but it looked like a very popular place. Groups of friends were there clearly having fun. Utrecht has a beautiful town center and a tall, amazing church tower. So many great things to see in the NL, and even the most distant can be reached in less time than my normal commute to work. The hotel is just a mile or two from the freeway. Although I was originally a little confused by the freeways, they ended up being very easy to maneuver through the country on. (Just watch your speed -- I received a ticket in the mail for exceeding the freeway speed by less than 5 MPH [8 kph]. Apparently their camera took a nice tourist photo of this tourist speeding along. Their courts do not accept credit card payments, so you have to wire the money -- which ended up costing more than the 17 Euro ticket. Not that I wanted a ticket, mind you, but I sure was impressed with the Dutch efficiency! Anyway . . . ) For days you don't want to drive, you can get to the train station (a 10 minute walk to the bus stop, a few minute wait for the bus, and a quick 5 minute drive to the station), and from there you can get anywhere! The hotel itself was in good condition, although I must admit that we stayed in a suite that overlooked the lake. I've read reviews that the street-side is noisier (we were able to sleep with our windows wide open). It is evident when walking along the front of the hotel that there is an older part to the hotel as well, but I can't speak to that. Although the hotel has conference rooms, a restaurant, bars, etc., it doesn't have the largest or grandest lobby or public areas. For us, however, it was perfect. Every staff member we met was wonderful and courteous. The manager, the front desk staff, the restaurant and bar staff, and the housekeeping staff. Finally, there was a situation that could have been not-so-good but it turned out really good. Traveling for only two weeks (hey, we're Americans with American jobs -- we don't get 6 weeks of Holiday like our European neighbors), we only brought a week's of clothes each and planned to do laundry. I'm not sure if we just couldn't read the Dutch instructions or if there was really something wrong with the dryer, but the machine we used -- the only one available to guests -- would not dry our clothes. Imagine one wet load in the dryer and another in the wash. The Manager did his best to help us, but we couldn't get the clothes to dry. We looked at the grim possibility of lugging two laundry loads of wet clothes on our early morning train trip to Paris the next day. It was Sunday and it was 10:00 at night. Then, without hesitation, a most wonderful employee from the front desk offered to dry our clothes in the commercial dryer (for towels and sheets) so we could rest for our trip. When I woke early the next morning, I found the laundry neatly folded and I was told she stayed hours after her work shift ended to get it done for us. I could have told you how awful it was that the hotel dryer didn't work. But that could have happened anywhere. Instead, I'm telling you how devoted to customer service the staff was, and how they chose to respond to the problem. Would that have happened back home? I would hope so, but would also doubt it. What a long winded way to say how much we enjoyed our stay. The staff at the Hotel Mitland made our vacation delightful. I'll stay there again.

one of the nicest hotels in Utrecht

First of all be aware, due to its very active convention centre it is not always easy to find a hotel in Utrecht. Try to book as far in advance as possible. My company does a lot of buisness in Utrecht so I have stayed in several hotels in this area and I generally prefer the Mitland. The hotel has recently been redecorated and most areas have a fresh new feel to it. The rooms are large, especially for Europe. The indoor swimming pool and sauna are nice, well kept and have an absolutely stunning view of a small lake & park (rooms with this view are slightly more expensive then regular rooms). The breakfast is absolutely fantastic! The most extensive I have seen in any hotel. Now the down side: Location is outside of the city centre and in a park which means in the evening women alone should probably only arrive and leave by taxi. During the day there are several transportation options such a public transport or walking to get to the centre. On the other hand, the park is very pretty and extensive, and excellent place for a romantic stroll or some exercise. I also found the staff a bit cold and unhelpful at times although check out and check in are handled professionally. Finally it is worth mentioning that the hotel does not have air-conditioning. This is not unusual in Holland where temperatures rarely go over 25 C but on one of the occasions I stayed here I found the room stuffy and too hot and the only solution offered was a fan.

Not much to fault at this hotel……..

Not much to fault at this hotel……..except possibly the price, coming in at around ?100 per night for my stay. The Mitland is a modern hotel. My room was large, overlooking the lake (with a backdrop of trees which just about hid the surrounding buildings), well fitted with twin beds, wardrobe etc, flat screen TV and access to the internet (for an extra fee) if you wanted it. The prices of the minibar were not particularly expensive. The bathroom was opulent and everything was clean. Additionally there was a trouser press and my room was warm. One quirk of the electronic key system was if you closed & locked your door and then wanted to open it from the inside and put a ‘do not disturb notice’ on the door, then an alarm was set off…fortunately stopping when you closed the door again. The breakfast was excellent with plenty to choose from. A particularly good feature was the coffee making machines which ground the beans and produced coffee of a superior quality to that seen in many hotels. Although not sampled by myself, there appeared to be many other guests enjoying evening and lunchtime menus in the restaurant. I was disappointed not to have had chance to enjoy the swimming pool which looked very inviting. Although there was a conference taking place at the same time that I stayed, this did not impinge on other guests. Infact one was not disturbed much at all – the staff were not intrusive. If you put your mind to it, you could walk to the centre of town in about 25 minutes through some nice residential areas. All in all a hotel that I would recommend.

I stayed there on a business trip. The room is ok, except for the mosquitos. I had to kill about 20 of them before I was able to go to sleep. The rest was ok, although I did not see a lot in one night. But as far as I noticed the staff was ok. The opportunity of bowling is nice.
