"I have traveled a good deal throughout my life. This was one of the best experiences I have ever had with lodging. It was more of a B&B, which to me is a good thing. The wonderful, warm, friendly accomodating staff met our every need. The beautiful gardens in the back of the stone house are tranquil..."

We returned from a weekend break at the Pear Tree a week ago. We were intitally impressed by the warm welcome although the hotel interior is rater tired looking but spotlessly clean. The rooms were a similar standard with complimentary shortbread and sherry. We would (and most other people I should imagine) have preferred tea and coffee in the room. Tea and coffee was available from reception but you are charged for this (not a lot but charged all the same). We ate in the hotel restaurant the first night - the food was very good but the waiting staff did not communicate at all and were very inpersonal. There didnt seem to be anyone taking charge and we had to grab a waiter to ask for drinks as one went past! The restaurant and bar has nil atmosphere. The bar in particular is like a library with no background music (or in any other any part of the hotel). The breakfast in the morning was very good with a buffet of cereals and fruit to choose from. The next night at dinner the waiting staff were as poor as the night before but this time the food was equally as poor. Tough duck, tough steak all topped of with the fact that we were in a boiling hot conservatory with no windows open. The breakfast on the Monday morning was terrible. There were only about four rooms occupied to it seemed that the hotel "gave up" at this point. No buffet, no freshly squeezed orange juice, burnt inedible breakfast. Hard boiled eggs. All served by an extremely rude waitress. I did complain to reception on departure and after I had to ask for a discount ?15 was knocked off the bill. Beware of the prices of the drinks - ?3.80 for a pint of lager and ?5.85 for an Archers and lemonade! The bill for drinks for four with a meal came to ?81!! Of course you dont get your bill until the end of the stay so it hits you as a bit of a shock!! Overall overpriced, unfriendly staff, food inconsistant.

Stayed over at the Pear Tree with friends for one night in early December First impressions were very strong as this is a lovely old fashioned stone house set in picturesque gardens in the middle of countryside. Inside the decor is less pleasing seeming quite dated in an 80s floral/pink/chintz style. Receptionist was very pleasant and we were shown to a room in the newer part of the house which is off a three story atrium with glass roof. It too was clean, spacious but very dated in decor and furnishings (perhaps i am getting too used to the minimalist look!) Bathroom was large and had a corner spa bath. Biggest downside was the lack of coffee making facilities in the room. Wandered downstairs for a pre dinner drink and found the bar rather open and a little souless- usual decor prevailed. Then hit gold in our discovery of the library, a small, darker, more atmospheric room dominated by books (obviously!) and a huge roaring log fire. Bliss! Chose from the extensive wine list and found it very hard to move into the conservatory for dinner! But we were glad we did! Dinner was superb and great value at £34.50 for 3 courses. All very hign standard and wine list also up to the job. still Breakfast next day very pleasant with no buffet- a waitress served cooked effort. Overall very enjoyable. Staff all friendly and good value. Just needs that decor makeover!

From the moment I pulled up in the taxi outside the Pear Tree I felt relaxed. I received the warmest of welcomes and was delighted with my bedroom which was very spacious and had homely touches such as fresh flowers, a decanter of sherry, homemade biscuits, fresh fruit and ducks in the bathroom! The best thing about my bedroom was the stunning views which, having arrived late, I didn't get the joy of seeing until the next morning. I had a patio door out onto a balcony and had far reaching views across the beautifully manicured gardens and pond to woodland - idyllic! Shame I had to go to work but that was why I was in the area!! The dinner was exquisite and the friendly staff in the restaurant made me feel very at ease which made it a pleasureable experience even though I was dining alone. Would I stay again? - at the drop of a hat! I have raved about it so much to my husband that we are determined to find a reason to re-visit!

Pear Tree is a lovely building, in beautiful grounds, and easy to find. The room was small but comfortable. Dinner was excellent, well served, lovely food and a relaxing environment. Breakfast was disappointing, cold toast, over cooked egg and under cooked tomato! However, service was first class, from the moment we arrived.
