Happy, but read the reviews carefully

We were happy with our stay at the New Hotel La Baume but I would encourage people to read the reviews here carefully. We had room 301, which was absolutely huge (contrary to reviews of other rooms). The service was okay and the public carpark (at Les Halles) is only 5 minutes away. Overall we were happy to stay here a night, but it lacked the character and charm of other great places we've stayed in the south of France.

This well appointed hotel in an old building has an abundance of character, yet clean and well furnished. The staff were pleasant and helpful, the location central yet relatively quiet, and the food and drinks were typically first class. Good value booked directly via the hotel's website. Thoroughly recommended.

All the reviews regarding this hotel are essentially accurate and I think very fair. Nimes is a wonderful old town so you have no access to car parking at the hotel you go a short distance away and park in the shopping centre for 8 euro a day. This was all fine and well but not passed on by the hotel at all, we found it by chance. The building is certainly old and quaint but in a somewhat run down bit of the old time near to the street dwellers who although not violent can be a bit intimidating late at night. We were there for 4 days and had a clean room with working A/C and a window overlooking the street. That is all the good parts said, the room was tiny, smaller than Parisian rooms which at least were built as hotels in the 1800s, this place was converted from a house and so has no excuse. Do not on any account take rooms 109 or 209, they are the smallest according to the room plans and we were in the former. OK, I know we should have complained but we are Brits and tend to accept things, not any more, in future I will complain. This has happened a few times and I am not sure if it is the third party booking which causes it? 109 was a small box with a miniature bathroom inside making it even smaller. Bathroom door opened directly to the bed which was just a bit too intimate for me. A/C worked but was a bit smelly. Interior courtyard was really nice and the staff pleasant if somewhat distant. One thing which really irked me was the lateness of room service. It appeared to be 1 really hard worked lady who cleaned the rooms from the top of the hotel downwards finished around 5pm. Of course we were in the bottom floor and so our room was almost the last to be dealt with around 4.30pm. I did not like this as we were out early and liked to come back for a shower late afternoon only to find wet towels. The hotel is nearby the main sites and there are plenty of restaurants further into the old town. Good concept spoiled by bad design. I would not use it again.
