Tucked away on a residential street, about five minutes walk from the train station, the Residence Hotel is perhaps one of the nicest hotels for under $200 you can find. The staff, from reception, restaurant and cleaning, are first-class and trained expertly. After a quick check-in, I was shown to my room. It was a standard size room for E.U., but had a great view to trees and a mountain range. There was a basket of fresh fruit and a small glass of sherry in the room as well. The bathroom was sparkling and had standard amenities. The bed was not quite a queen size but certainly comfortable. After dinner outside the hotel (the hotel restaurant is closed on Monday nights), we came back to the hotel and found a small candy, a turned down bed, and a bed time story to read. In the morning, breakfast was everything that you could want; typical European fare of deli meats and cheeses, yogurt and bread, coffee and tea. They also cooked to order eggs and bacon and a variety of fresh fruit and juices were available. Check out was equally seamless and again, the stafff was courtious, helpful, and an all around attractive group. My colleague stayed for additional nights and had dinner at the hotel. He said it was first class and would enthusiastically recommend the dinner to anyone who stayed in the hotel.

Wir waren des guten Rufs des Restaurants wegen im Hotel. Wahrlich eine der tollen kulinarischen Erfahrungen in Deutschland. Die Angestellten im Hotel waren freundlich und sehr professionell, das Hotel war nicht voll und so bekamen wir ein Upgrade zu einer wunderschönen Suite, dort fanden wir viele reizende Willkommensgrüße, z.B. ausgezeichneten Sherry und einen tollen Obstkorb. Die Suite war elegant und sehr komfortabel, wir hätten hier Wochen verbringen können. Der Hauptgrund für unseren Aufenthalt im Hotel Residence jedoch ist die innovative, ausgezeichnete Cuisine im Restaurant. Das siebengängige 'Sommernachtstraum' Menü war eine Folge von ausgesprochen originellen und harmomischen Gerichten, wir waren noch Stunden danach im 7. Himmel. Wir haben zwar auch in anderen hochgelobten Restaurants in Deutschland gegessen aber nichts kam der unvergleichlichen Erfahrung im Residence nahe. Ein Juwel. Das Hotel/Restaurant liegt in einem Vorort von Essen, ein Auto ist hier von Vorteil. Man kann aber auch einfach ein Taxi nehmen, Sie werden es nicht bereuen.

We stayed in the hotel because of the great reputation of the restaurant - truly one of the great culinary experiences in Germany. The hotel staff was friendly and very professional and because the hotel was not full, we were upgraded to a beautiful suite where we found many delightful welcome gifts, like excellent sherry and a delicious fruit basket. The suite was elegant and most comfortable, we could have spent weeks there! The number one reason, however, to stay at hotel Résidence is the innovative, superb cuisine of its restaurant. Our seven course "summer night's dream" menu was a succession of startlingly original, harmonious plates that left us in postprandial reverie for hours. Even though we dined at other highly praised restaurants in Germany, none could match the unique dining experience we had at Résidence. A gem! The hotel-restaurant is located in a suburb of Essen, so going by car is a big advantage. Otherwise simply take a cab, you will be happy you did.

Liegt in einer Wohngegend, ca. 5 Gehminuten vom Hauptbahnhof entfernt. Für unter 200 Dollar die Nacht ist das Residence Hotel vermutlich das beste Hotel, das man nur finden kann. Die Angestellten (Empfang, im Restaurant und Reinigungskräfte) sind erstklassig und gut geschult. Nach dem schnellen Einchecken wurde mir mein Zimmer gezeigt. Für Europa war die Größe normal aber ich hatte einen tollen Blick auf ein paar Bäume und einige Hügel. Im Zimmer fand sich auch ein Obstkorb und ein kleines Glas Sherry. Das Badezimmer war blitzblank und hatte alle Einrichtungen, die man erwarten kann. Das Bett war nicht ganz Queen Size aber auf jeden Fall bequem. Nach einem Abendessen auswärts (das Hotelrestaurant ist montags geschlossen) kamen wir wieder ins Hotel und fanden Süßigkeiten und aufgeschlagene Betten vor, dazu noch eine Gute-Nacht-Geschichte. Das Frühstück bot alles, was man sich nur wünschen konnte: typische europäische Gerichte, jede Menge Aufschnitt, Käse, Joghurt und Brot, Kaffee und Tee. Man konnte sich auch die Eier so zubereiten lassen, wie man das mochte und es gibt auch Speck, viel frisches Obst und auch Obstsäfte. Das Auschecken ging auch ohne Probleme vonstatten und auch hier waren die Angestellten zuvorkommend, hifsbereit ... eine rundherum ansprechende Truppe. Mein Kollege verbrachte hier noch ein paar Nächte mehr und hat im Hotel zu Abend gegessen. Er sagte, dass es erstklassig gewesen sei und würde das Abendessen allen, die im Hotel unterkommen, nur als Herz legen wollen.
