Part of my recent trip to Russia was spent at the Grand Hotel Emerald in St. Petersburg. I was given a room that smelled of smoke and faced the dark inner courtyard. When I complained, they gave me a non-smoking room that faced the dark inner courtyard and told me the hotel was fully booked and there were no other rooms. I soon realized the hotel was not fully booked. The first morning, there was no one to serve me coffee at the included buffet breakfast so I ordered one from their coffee bar. At the end of breakfast, a waitress apeared with a bill for the coffee. I explained there was no one to serve me when I arrived so I shouldnt have to pay, but she just looked at me and demanded I sign the bill. Then, the concierge would only get me a hotel car at 5 times the price of a regular taxi. She said you could get killed in a city taxi and they wouldn't be responsible . I asked the concierge to help me confirm my next flight. She told me she couldn't, the phone line was busy, and 'oh, this is russia. you can't expect much.' This made the airline cancel my flight and I had to pay for a new flight to my next destination. The reception desk told me to go to a restaurant a few blocks away that was closed! These are just a few examples of how badly I felt treated. My stay was very unpleasant. I felt unpampered and very ripped off. Please don't stay at this hotel. They should not get your support.
