Four of us stayed here over New Year 07/08. We found the hotel to be warm, comfortable and on the whole good, helpful staff. Our rooms were nice and the bed was amazing - the size of two double beds pushed together! And the bathrooms were lovely too.
Breakfast is fantastic, a really good mix of continental and cooked. We ate in the restaurant once in the evening (on New Years Eve) and the food was of a high standard, although it lacked a bit in atmosphere - and that was on New Years Eve!
Compared with the hotel we stayed in in Moscow, this place was great.
The metro stop is just up the road and the hotel is off the main St Petersburg Street, Nevsky Prospekt. It's probably a good 15- 20 minute walk from the main sites (Church of the Saviour on the Blood, Hermitage etc) but for those less able to walk the sites are just a few minutes on the metro.
On the whole would definitely recommend this hotel.

Helvetia Hotel & Suites went the extra mile for my friend and I who are traveling from London to Hong Kong by rail.
First, they honored and early check-in when we arrived at 8:00am, then they made inquiries with our follow-on hotel in Moscow (which were not successful). We stayed in the Helvetia for 5 nights, and each and every day they greeted us pleasantly and did everything to meet our needs.
The mini-suites were wonderful. It was an added touch to have a full kitchen separate from the bedroom. The only downside was that there was no air conditioning, and St Petersburg was undergoing a heatwave (30C) during our stay.
We would definitely recommend this hotel.

We stayed in this hotel from 2nd August to the 7th August, during what was a very hot period.
A wonderful hotel, close to the city attractions and a very pleasant suprise, when we compared to the hotel we stayed in Moscow.
No A/C in the room, but a fan supplied which was sufficient. The hotel has been renovated to retain its olde world charm, and the hotel is situated around a courtyard, well set back from the road and nice to sit in during the evening.
Food is good and plentiful, and the brown bread is excelent.
If you go to St. Petersburg, this is a good, reasonably priced hotel with good location.
You need more than five days in this city to do it justice. Very European.

Helvetia is a good hotel with above average service by Russia standards. I arrived before 2pm check in and the staff was able to find me a room. My visit fell on a St. Petersburg heat wave so lack of Air Conditioning was a very bad surprise. One would normally expect it from a 4-star property. The In-between floor elevators were also not what you would expect from a 250 EUR/night hotel.
The room was very spacious and you definitely get more value for the money in that regard than most other 4-star hotels in the city. The hotel bar did not disappoint with excellent proprietary beers.
Overall decent hotel which i would consider again in the winter. But during the summer month you are probably better of with SAS Radisson or one of the other hotels.
