Sweet Small Luxury Hotel in Portofino

I recommend this hotel for: Young singles.
We stayed here the night after our wedding and in other occasions. It is a small, modern boutique hotel, very nicely renovated with not too big but airy rooms. It is perfect if you want to stay in Portofino for a short 1 or 2 nights stay. Like all the hotels in the area it is not cheap, but if you go off season (late September, early June) you can really enjoy Portofino (not so crowded) and spend a little less. The staff is incredibly nice and helpful. Although the hotel does not have much of a view or any amenities such as the pool, they do bring you to the beach in Paraggi with their van any time of day. The beds are very comfortable and we like the decor. They have a simple but good breakfast and they park your car for you (no extra charge for the parking). One thing we loved, my husband asked for a bottle of champagne in the room to surprise me and thex had an excellent choice. By the way they are also pet friendly and my dogs were very comfortable in the junior suite which has a balcony.

Stayed for two nights at this hotel in mid-September 2007. Overall I liked the hotel, but I don't think it is worth the expense and if you want to see Portofino you could easily do it as a day trip from Santa Margherita Ligure and stay at one of the grander and less expensive hotels there. However, if you must spend the night in Portofino, this is a nice place to stay. The hotel has a very boutique feel to it and I actually liked that having stayed at some of the grander more old world hotels in both Milan and Santa Margherita, but the rooms are very small. I travelled this time with one of my girlfriends, but had I been travelling with my six foot five significant other he would have been very cramped. The hotel seemed relatively new and I loved the shower in our room. I actually think the shower was the highlight of the stay. It is a steam/vichy shower that I could have stayed in for hours, especially after we did the very arduous hike to san fruttuoso abbey. The breakfast was adequate and the plasma in the breakfast room always seemed to have these sort of interesting clips of safaris which seemed a little strange. As someone else mentioned, they are doing construction right across the street and there really is no way to escape this. They didn't seem to work on Mondays, but on Tuesday they woke me up with hammering at 7:30 in the morning. Not the way you want to be woken up when you are paying $500 US per night. One other thing to note is that this hotel is set back a little bit from the main square of Portofino and you have to climb up a little hill to get there. Overall I am glad I stayed here and didn't fork up the $1500 per night for the Splendido (while the Splendido did seem lovely it is a major hike from the main square and the age demographic is more geared towards an older set). However, if I had to do it again I would probably park myself at the Grand Miramare and just do a day trip to Portofino.

My husband and I spent two nights at the Hotel San Giorgio in late May 2007. It is a handsome, chic, boutique-like hotel with comfortable rooms about 5 minutes walk from the center of Portofino. Unfortunately, currently an apartment complex is being built across from the hotel which can make it noisy to stay there during the week. Another option in Portofino is the Hotel Splendido. Although we did not stay there and can not comment on its rooms, its public areas are “splendid” and its outdoor restraurant with views over the bay is really special. Make a reservation and arrive when the restaurant opens to obtain one of the choice tables (assigned on a first come, first served basis). Portofino is one of those special places that fill up during the day with tourists and revert to quiet charm in the late afternoon. We especially enjoyed the 30 – 40 minute walk with its panoramic views to the Castello di San Giorgio, Castello Brown and the Portofino light house. Places we liked eating in the main square include Taverna del Marinaio (need a reservation, even for lunch) and Chuflay Bar (pricey but delicious food).

A room in the attic with a shower I had to kneel in and hold the wand with no place to mount it. No view and no deck and everything very tight and 660 Euro which was around $1000 US at the time. Sorry just not good enough. Also to get extra blankets at night found no answer at the desk and to get the wi-fi needed a visit to the desk also even though it was available, you had to go down at 11pm to the desk to sign up for it and pay or charge the 10 Euro per day and make the big signature deal before you could get connected. Silly when you could simply do it on line. Biggest problem was small tight room with way too big a price tag. I paid 5000 Euro per night at the Splendido for three nights before staying here but could not extend as they had a full house and that might have had something to do with my disatisfaction but I will let you be the judge. Never again San Giorgio. You have received your last Euro from me. You are too tight in every way. B PS Very Comfy Bed.

We booked a two-night package at this lovely hotel for our 20th wedding anniversary and found it perfect. The rooms are comfortable and well-equipped. We were upgraded to a junior suite and had a reasonable view of the harbour. The hotel staff were helpful and made everything easy - from parking the car to finding a harbourside table for dinner. The hotel is a two-minute walk from the harbour. Portofino is a small but extremely pleasant place to stay with short walks to the nearby lighthouse and other points, as well as lots of people and scenery to observe. It is also a very easy bus ride to nearby Sta. Margherita, where you can get a 6-minute train ride to the captivating seaside town of Camogli, or the other way to Cinque de Terre. Portofino has a number of very good restaurants - a highlight for us was O Magazin. A dinner at Splendido de Mare was included in our package but it was not as good and much much more expensive than O Magazin, although certainly made for good people watching.
