Year opened: Raffles Hotel opened in 1887 in a rather somber-looking old bungalow known as Beach House. It was named after Sir Stamford Raffles, founder of modern Singapore. Solar topi, bentwood tables and rattan chairs were a part of Raffles Hotel's early style.
