"The Trip ------------- Just returned from Wroclaw (Dec 1st to 3rd 2006) We were 4 lads who picked Wroclaw out of the hat so to speak. Two twin rooms was the way to go to keep the weekend as cheap as possible...and what a great choice the Mercure Panorama was! Each twin room cost us £40 - that's for..."

We spent two nights at the Mercure Panorama, and highly recommend it. It is 5 minutes from the Rynek (central square), and is large, modern and clean. We had booked for 2 adults and a child, and had a double bed, with a fold out sofa bed in a reasonably sized room, with large window, with a view to a church. Three people were able to stay in this room at the same price. Hotel reception is friendly, fluent in English, and offer useful guides, and maps. The top floor (6) affords a lovely view. The bathroom is modern, tiled, with a powerful shower, but no tub. There is a minibar fridge.A small bottle of complimentary bottled water is left for you daily. CNN and BBC is on the news among Polish channnels. The lobby is modern, airy and comfortable. We did not eat there, as the breakfast is priced at 14 Euros pp, and the hotel is basically attached to a large multistory shopping complex, with restaurants, bakeries, and even a large grocery store. So ~3 Euros for a cappucino and a pastry were just fine... The grocery store is also convenient for snacks for the hotel room, including a fine selection of Vodkas in mini-bottles. The hotel is favored by business people, and by locals- a wedding took place on saturday evening in the upper reception areas. For our return, we walked about 15 minutes to a bus stop (#406), near the Train station. The trip to the airport is 25 min. and only 2 Zloty pp (

Stayed at the Mercure for 4 nights, booking on a company rate with a standard double room. The room was as described, fairly standard but perfectly adequate. The bathroom had no bath, but the shower was very powerful and spacious. No tea or coffee making facilities. Breakfast is the usual mix of cold and hot (scambled & boiled eggs, bacon, sausages, tomatoes, mushrooms) and kept us full through the day. Staff were excellant, very friendly, gave us maps and guide books and arranged car hire at a good rate (seemed a better rate than I could find on-line from the UK). Did not eat in the hotel in the evening, but bar staff were very friendly and attentive. As you would expect, there is a premium to pay for drinking in the hotel bar. Overall the hotel was perfectly adequate, well positioned for the town (5 minute walk to Rynek square) and added to our enjoyment of Wroclaw. With regards to the town, I would definitely recommend a visit. It is very picturesque and extremely good value for money, and even though we took some wrong turns when walking and strayed into some less nice areas, at no time did we ever feel unsafe. There were a few local drunks in Rynek square but they were no bother. At the weekend suddenly beggars appeared in the square and could be somewhat annoying but not a big issue. The other embarassment for the weekend was the appearance of British stag and hen parties who seem to give a poor impression to other nations of the UK, but again no big issue! We made good use of a great & free local guide book with very honest and accurate reviews of the towns restaurants. We can highly recommend Pod Papugami restaurant, but you may have to book. We were lucky as quite early in the evening to get a table and extremely good value (GBP35 for a shared starter, 2 mains, 2 x half litres of house red and a beer). Nice surroundings with the old film posters etc and a very good band playing in the bar area. Can also recommend the Acropolis greek restaurant. Greek food would not normally be on the agenda when in Poland, but the review was good and I can highly recommend the lamb in lemon sauce dish. Also good value for money. Novocaina in the square was great for cheap, but very large, freshly cooked pizza's. With regards to sightseeing, we drove (2.5 hrs) to Auschwitz which was a sombre place but a must do. Although sad, we were very glad we made the trip and apart from difficulty finding the right road out of Wroclaw is an easy journey, mostly motorway with one small toll to pay. The Wroclaw museums unfortunately do not translate their displays into other languages so you have to make up your own descriptions. Didnt find the Japanese garden even after much walking and I counted about 320 steps up the tower of the church (Elizabeth?), but a good view from the top.

Had a long weekend in Wroclaw and stayed in the Mercure. Everything about this hotel impressed me ( but did not eat there, so cannot comment on the food), staff were helpful at both check in and also arranged taxi to the Airport on departure. Rooms are clean, en suite and sizable. Has a sprinkling of tourists, but seems to cater for business parties in main. Location is about 5 minutes from the main square in the old city,is next door to a shopping complex, is in an area of the city that is busy, but my room on the 6th floor, was very quiet. Appropriate that it should be called the Panorama as room was directly opposite an old church and beyond that, could see the spiers of Cathedral Island.
