JackSD has stayed here and says:
"The Grand Hotel Mercure, located in the center of Nantes, is a very good business hotel that offers quiet rooms and efficient service -- but no stylishness, few amenities, and only an average breakfast buffet. Rooms are small even by French standards, and the suites are far too expensive for their fairly..."

First off, if you are booking at short notice the mercure website offers some good prices. I walked into this hotel and asked for the price for a room for the night and was told 155 euro. I then sat down, got onto the wifi network with my laptop and booked the same room for 110. Nice. Why they can't just offer this rate at reception is beyond me but that's another story. Anway, the hotel is very well located in Nantes, with lots of restaurants etc. nearby. My room was very comfortable with a really comfy bed and a nice bathroom. From reading other reviews I can see how the shower could leak, but with a little care this can be avoided. Service wise, I was a litle surprised when I asked for an iron and ironing board at reception only to be handed these items to carry myself (along with my bag) up to my room. In most four star hotels I imagine the usual response would be that an iron would be sent up. One thing to note is that I found Nantes highly confusing to drive in and the hotel car park is far from easy to locate. There are tram lines throughout the city center and it can be very unclear whether one is driving on a road, a tram line or even on a pedestrian street. To get to the car park you need to drive a shortr way up a busy street mainly used by pedestrians, so go with care!

We have stayed in this hotel 3 times over 3 years and are about to book again! I absolutely love the place, dead central, restaurants and cafes all around and lovely cool calm atmosphere; when you have been sight seeing etc its nice to come back and have some peace!! True, we have never eaten here or even been to the bar- but we found the staff friendly and the family room really large and airy . As a base, i dont think you will find a better one in Nantes!

We stayed in this hotel for one night, which was more than enough. The hotel was well-located in the centre of town with an underground car park. A gloomy passage links the car park to reception with no apparent lift, so luggage was hauled up stairs from the car park. Reception was ok, but the room was terrible. Cheap and badly fitting furniture and a pokey bathroom. Once shoehorned in, it wasn’t possible to have a shower without flooding out the entire bathroom. Neighbours across from the hotel provided lively entertainment with screaming and shouting being their method of communication – ok during the day, but a nightmare at night. The restaurant looked like it was best avoided – we visited La Cigale instead which was superb and very good value, both for dinner and for breakfast. How on earth this hotel manages to maintain its four stars we do not know!

We spent a night here en route to Bordeaux in Aug 06. The hotel is well located, with a short walk to the old town. The reception staff were friendly, though offered no help with luggage or finding our room, and instead watched us strugglng with suitcases (it was the start of a 2 week holiday, and we had a fair amount of luggage!). We had booked a junior suite, which turned out to be a nice bright large room, with windows overlooking a square. Before walking into the old town for dinner we visited the bar, and spent the next ten minutes trying to find a member of staff to serve us. The bar has one wall papered with the autographs of all the famous people who have visited the hotel, from politicians to film stars - I can only assume they received better service! We had a comfortable night, but would probably look for another hotel if we were to vist Nantes in the future...
