This is the 2nd time we have stayed here and we stay here because for some reason we always seem to have an early train to catch the next morning and it is directly opposite the train station. There was 7 of us, the hotel website did not allow us to book non-smoking rooms. My sister (13) could have easily stayed in our room on the floor for €10 as stipulated on their wall in reception, but the man on reception - despite speaking French to him - muttered maybe 5 words to us and we needed to pay for an extra room which was €76. 2 rooms were on the non-smoking level and were really good - fabulous size, great views onto the street and really great bathrooms. Really nice comfortable beds. 2 rooms were on the smoking level - we didn't seem to be given any option - one was very small - just enough to walk around the bed and STUNK of smoke. The other room was bigger and smelt slightly of smoke. Both looked into the interior light well. It was a huge shame about the reception man, previously the staff were very helpful, especially seeing we arrived at 1am in the morning previously. We did arrive in the middle of the music festival so maybe he just hadn't had any sleep for a few days. A colourful area to stay in, and takes about 10mins to walk into the centre. nice bolangerie a few shops down for pastries for breakfast. IF you choose to go here, RING the hotel, ask for a non-smoking room and we found the rooms facing the street much nicer. Even in the midst of the yearly music festival - which I have to say we were there by sheer coincidence - where no one sleeps and parties all night. We all slept really well. The music festival is definately a must as well.

Looking for a hotel in Toulouse that can cope with 19 17 year olds?

The staff at Ibis Gare Matabiau are to be commended on their attitude to our tour party consisting of 19 lively 17 year old Rugby players and 12 supporters. As you can imagine, not many hotels are prepared to accomodate such a party, but the hotel has a rugby theme and coped admirably, including placing most of the lads in corner rooms to minimise potential disturbance to other guests! Whilst it is definitely in the 'cheap and cheerful' category, resembling the Travel Lodge chain type of accomodation, it was exactly what we needed. 10 minutes walk to the main entertainment and shopping areas, the hotel is built on a corner so that the front rooms have views across a wide boulevard to the Canal du Midi and impressive Gare Matabiau (though parents, you might want to ask to have these rooms rather than face into the rather dingy light well). Be advised that it is close to the red light district in Toulouse with the associated characters abounding (which proved more of a mild entertainment to the boys rather than a potential difficulty).
