I fully agree with all the other reviews posted so far about the Ibis, Linz. I first stayed there in 2002, and was fairly impressed with what I got for the money; I stayed again for a couple of nights recently and was pleased to see that nothing had slipped.
Linz has the aspect of an industrial city - especially if you approach from the east and have to get past the VOEST-Alpine steelworks which dominate the town - but the old city around the market sqaure and the river is unexpectedly picturesque.
Any visitors going in the near future who saw the mentions here of the Postlingbergbahn - the tram that climbs the small mountain on the north bank of the river - should note that there are plans to modernise it. My advice is to go now whilst it is still ancient and charming.
In 2002, the place to eat and drink in town was the Josefshof - a bustling city brewery pub with a fine line in hearty Austrian food. Unfortunately, I was unable to check it out this time as they appeared to have scaled the food back and it looked more like a typical pub/Austrian 'Biesl'. I also found and enjoyed the Wok.
I also ate in the Ibis. Although Ibis hotels all look the same, there are local/regional variations, especially in food. The restaurant at the Ibis Linz was reasonable in price, good in quality and extremely rapid in service! When I stayed in October, they were offering a seasonal menu with wild boar or venison at about 7-10 Euro per meal (depending on choice). Not the cheapest I've ever had, but far from the most expensive and the quality was very good.

This is a 3 Star IBIS hotel, looks like most other Ibis hotels across Europe. Its location is very handy for the Hauptbahnhof (main train station).
I had to take a taxi from the airport at 9pm as there was no public transport and the taxi driver looked in horror "you are taking holidays in Linz" after that I was sure that I'd made a mistake.
Anyway, I was only staying one night and the Ibis was clean, comfortable and had everything you could possibly need. There was an internet kiosk in the lobby, a bar and restaurant.
The room I felt was quite small, but then I was travelling alone, and maybe there are larger family rooms as it is a big hotel.
Quite a bargain at 48 EUR - I was pleased with that. Linz was actually a very nice Austrian city, with lots of shops, churches, a small old town and other excursions and things to do...

We stayed for three nights and were more than satisfied. The hotel has larger than average rooms and is in an ideal location opposite the main railway station. This gives easy access to the excellent tram network which (as usual for all the European cities we have visited) is fast, clean and efficient. Although the hotel is on a main road, the double glazing was sufficient to block out most of the noise. We were woken early one morning by work being carried out on a nearby office block but how many of us go on a mini break to spend all morning in bed!! The buffet breakfast was of a very high standard and the staff ensured that all items were constantly topped up. We would highly recommend that any visitor purchases the Linz City Ticket (available from the hotel, station or tourist info office in the main square). This costs just 20 euro and gives quite exceptional value for money for the tourist. We took full advantage of the vouchers included and estimated we had saved at least 30 to 40 euro by having this ticket.
In conclusion, I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel as a base for a trip to Linz.

Hotel Ibis is a moderate European hotel in a great location, across the street from the Hauptbahnhof, the main railroad station. The Hauptbahnhof has a grocery store, drugstore, bookstore, newstand in the bottom level as well as a restaurant and a food court with several very good eating places. We especially enjoyed the Wok and the Athena.
The hotel was well-kept up and clean. It cost 71 euros per night for a double with an extra 9 euros per person for the breakfast buffet. The buffet was a typical European one with breads, rolls, lunch meats and cheeses, hard boiled eggs, fruit, etc.
There was a bus stop right outside the hotel serviced by four or five bus lines. In addition, you could catch any of three tram lines in the lower level of the train station. Each stop had an automated ticket dispenser for mini, midi, and maxi tickets. The maxi cost 3 euros and let you ride anywhere all day. We took the tram to the Postlingberg mountain tram and went up the tramway to the top--a worthwhile trip. This tram is in the Guiness Book of Records for being the steepest non-cog tram in the world. It cost 10.50 euros for three of us.
The Old Town was charming and for 5 euros per person you could ride on a little tourist train which took a 25 minute spin through the Old Town with narration. You sat in the car which had the narration in your language. The Neuer Dom (Old Cathedral) was especially beautiful.
