OMG! It was horrifying and it just proves the old adage "you get what you pay for." The lobby looked well enough, but my room was on the 4th floor which was inaccessible by elevator. So I had to lug my heavy suitcase up the stairs. The 4th floor must be where old Party members go to die because it is simply gross. The carpet looked like it had not been changed since Brezhnev?s death. I was afraid to take off my shoes. The blanket on the bed looked to be as old as the carpet. I really could not lie my body against that thing. I shudder to think what strange fluids are trapped in the fibers. The bed was lumpy. There was one tiny window , about 2x2, the AC was dubiously working. Still I tried to look at the upside. Then I went into the bathroom and realized that the ceiling was so low that I would have to sit in the tub in order to take a bath: there was no upside. I immediately pulled out my travel guide and found a 5 star hotel down the road. I checked out right then and there. Just in time too as I got a few bites, hence the tagline of this review. To add insult to injury they still charged me for the length of my stay. I shall be protesting the charge with my CC company. I have found out the hard way that there is a vast range in hotel quality in Dubrovnik. The three stars are dodgey and then there are the 5 stars. In my opinion, it?s worth to pay the extra money.

Ok hotel in an 'ok' location, but WAY too expensive!

First of all, this hotel is not luxury and it is not in central Dubrovnik. You have to take a twenty minute bus journey to the beautiful centre of Dubrovnik. People later advised us that you can rent an apprtment in cnetral Dubrovnik for less than we paid for the room and I would strongly advise doing tis if possible.
The room was very dark and the sea view was obstructed by many trees. The decor was in need of an update and for the price the breakfast was a bit low rent really.
If you need a hotel in Dibrovnik and there is nothing else available the stay here, otherwise look for something mroe central.

Hotel komodor Dubrovnik. comfortable and clean, that is it. Cold buffet breakfast ok, hot section pretty disgusting. I had one evening meal very boring ,unappetizing, advise booking bed and breakfast no other meals, there are far too many good restaurants in old town to waste money here.Front of house staff good ,house keeping good, bar staff useless ,three times Ihad to leave ,no staff to serve me,restaurant staff rude and unhelpful. Good position for access to old town , bus every 20 minutes like clockwork. For older couples only . I thought a little pricey for this level of service.

We have just spent a week at this hotel and came away very happy, despite reservations after reading a couple of the posts. The staff - front office, reception and dining room, were all really friendly and helpful. The hotel itself is small but perfectly adequate and the pool area is a bit sterile, being next to a busyish road, but provided a relaxing and enjoyable sun bathing experience.
We had booked half board but only ate at the hotel two nights. Whilst the food is average for a buffet, after a long day out and a big lunch, was fine. Okay, so the chef trained at the same catering school as the chef at the hospital canteen where I work, but there are plenty of restaurants in close walking distance.
The location is excellent for walking to the Lapad beaches and also for catching the bus into Dubrovnik itself. Our room was on the third floor with a balcony, so we did get a good view. The air conditioning worked really well.
The only downside was the mattress was absolutely awful. It was hard, thin and lumpy. We solved the problem by going and buying three of those cushions that you use for sunbathing and managed to get a comfortable night sleep.
I would go back to this hotel should I return to Dubrovnik.

Stayed in the Hotel Komodor for two weeks during July and August 2007 with my wife and 7 year old daughter. The rooms were comfortable and well appointed with free air conditioning.
The Hotel had a smallish pool that was ideal for our 7 year old. It was kept clean and in good order.
The hotel staff were efficient and courteous at all times and friendly too.
The restuarant food was of a good standard and had a reasonable choice of menus at uk comparable prices.
We were within a short 5 minute walk from the local beach and shopping facilities and a 20 minute bus ride from Dubrovnik old town.
The views across the sea were spectacular particularly at sunset.
The only fly in the ointment was the state of emergency issued during our stay when the local hill tops caught fire and air raid sirens were sounded to warn local residents. There was no clear indication given by the hotel staff as to what we had to do. They did their best to reassure us and made it clear that they would contact all guests if evacuation was to take place. Mildly disturbing, but as we had watched the situation unfold on the local tv we realised that we would not be in any immediate danger. If anything it was a rather exciting time watching sea planes scooping water up to dump on the fires for three solid days.
This did not affect the hotels level of service regardless of the fact that many of the staff's homes and families could well have been in danger.
I would reccommend the Hotel Komodor to anyone wishing to visit the beautiful area around Dubrovnik. I would say however that the area is not particularly suited to family groups as there is little to occupy young children. If you like history, culture the arts or good food, then this is a place well worth visiting.
