GeraldLosAngeles has stayed here and says:
"My friend and I stayed at the Westin Zagreb as tourists while travleing through Croatia. While the hotel is nicly renovated with modern, clean rooms and great views, I can't give it high-marks. The reception was cold and rude...did not crack a smile once. The restaurant was typically overpriced. ..."

I have stayed at the Westin (before it was an Intercontinental) on various business trips over the last ten years. Since I am always driving to Zagreb, it offers easy drives in and out of the city, and a safe parking lot in front of the hotel. The hotel was "the *****Star" hotel in Zagreb in its prime days. But unfortunately, has gotten older and it shows. The entrance and lobby still make good impressions, but seem a little underfurnished. Elevators are new and very fast and smooth. Rooms are from old and tired, to new and renovated. I guess you have to know which are the good floors. This last trip I only stayed one night, and did not use any of the facilities, so please see other reviews about the pool, bars and restaurants. What I would like to confirm from other reviews, is what I see as the main weakness of the hotel, the staff. Unfortunately, it seems that not much effort has been given on training the staff to an international standard, much less a *****Star level. Starting from the doormen, to the front desk, I never had the feeling of a trained and capable staff. The way I was processed through the front desk was something between a motel and a ***Airport hotel. No greetings, no smiles, nothing. Checkout, very early around 6 a.m. was even worse. It seemed that the staff was annoyed to have to work this early. There was no hospitality as all. I was really glad to get in my car and head home! This is not the way it should be. So my suggestion to you. It will be hard to find a really good hotel in Zagreb. The Westin is not bad, but make sure to find a room which you like. Don't expect too much and you will be fine. PS - The time before this visit I stayed at the Hotel International, which is a new private hotel. It has new rooms and better rates. Don't worry about the stars, since you can see this is very subjective.

We were here for the May bank-holiday weekend. A family of four -our two children being 13 & 10 yrs, we wanted a weekend that was different- one with comfortable accomodation, that combined a cultural experience with a sense of adventure. Zagreb did not fail to disappoint! We stayed at the contemporary, spacious & friendly "Westin" in the city. The taxi fare to the hotel was 250 kunas. The reception staff were polite & changed our rooms to adjoining ones on the same floor (8th) with hospitable smiles. The rooms were spacious, bright & modern with comfortable beds & adequate bathroom ammenities. They provide you with some coffee & tea making facilities, but if you need to replenish your stock, they will charge you. The pool is big, spacious & airy, with lovely interiors . However do take your own towels/ towels from your room as this part is not run by the hotel & they will charge you for towels. The staff here too are very friendly & are very good with travel / shopping advice. On the first day we walked to the lower town for breakfast . The hotels here do have the traditional buffet- style breakfast- at quite a high cost. But at a fraction of that cost you can savour Croation delicacies like pasties with different fillings, & experience the fashion-conscious city bustle around your morning cup of coffee, in the cafes in town. We then took the funicular to the upper town to look at the parliament, the Presidential palace, St.Mark's church & the Stone gate. Our curiosity & amazement was only interrupted once by the gun-fire from the Tower!! That afternoon, we took a short tram ride to Medvednica-a nature park. The peak of this hill, is accessible by cable car we were told but this was not in use on that day -so we, like many others (young & old) went on foot. The winter sports here are supposed to be excellent & we can imagine at a cheaper price compared to other popular destinations Wanting to see more of the country, the next day, we took a 50 minute train ride to the charming town of Karlovac! This town has been making beer for the 100years & is situated at the junction of 4 rivers. We found the Karona to be picturesque & it's water - clean & blue! During the comfortable & punctual train ride, to & fro, the children were amazed at the lack of safety ammenities at the rural stations but it showed them the need to watch out for themselves. When boarding these trains, care mst be taken as the platform does not quite rise to the steps. But, once again -people of all ages do this quite effortlessly. The central train-station in Zagreb is within walking distance (about 20mins) from the hotel, just past the botanical gardens & the Regency hotel. It is also accessible from the town-centre by tram. We would definately recommend a trip to this beautful place & if you are up for an adventure, -visit the towns on the out-skirts too!

The Westin Zagreb is a good choice for business and leisure – rates are comparably low and service standards quite good. The building itself looks like a typical ugly 80ies concrete thing but inside it is ok. The rooms have been refurbished and offer free broadband internet - quite rare in hotels of this class these days. The so called business centre is not worth mentioning but food and both restaurants are good. So are pool and gym areas. There is a huge garage under the building if you arrive by car; car rental is in the house (Alamo and National), also some airline offices. The location is good, you can walk to the old town and city centre, the National Theatre is just around the corner. All in all a recommendable hotel that I would definitely use again!

I am surprised that Westin and Starwoods would want to be associated with this Hotel. It is absolutely appaulling. My husband and I stayed here for 4 nights and couldn't wait to leave. As mentioned in other reviews, due to the location of the hotel, which is out of the center, you can be held captive by it's food and drink. It is well worth the effort to leave as the food in the restaruant is overpriced and boring. To give an example of how bad the food is I was served a hamberger in the cafe which was cooked on the outside but raw in the middle. Dont bother going to the bar. The service is really unfriendly and drink prices are on par with Western Europe. The bar is supposed to close at 1:00 am. We were there at 12:45 am. We noticed that 4 guests were turned away by the bar woman. We mentioned to her that they bar closes at 1 and she said that she was really tired and she wanted to go home. People speak highly of the beds here, yeah sure the linen is white but my mattress felt as though too many people had slept in the same spot and it needed to be replaced. I spilt something on the floor the day we arrived and it was still there the day that we left irrespective of the room being cleaned each day. Our room was incredibly hot and we could not turn the heat down. The whole hotel was overheated. Apart from one really nice waiter who helped us find something on our map, everyone who works at this hotel needs to go back to hospitality school to learn to smile, be helpful, cook, clean and serve.

I ended up staying here a night when my flight was canceled. The location is great-- just a block from the beginning of the center, which is full of shops, restaurants and the historical sites. The room was exceptionally clean, with a king size bed, TV, coffee maker, shampoo, etc. It was just like a North America Westin, with a pool, a few work out facilities and a spa. I thought the service was excellent and helpful. There is also a cafe, bar, and hotel restaurant. I would stay here again.
