The restaurant was exceptionally good and the sommelier even better - if like us you are wine lovers let him guide you for an incredible degustation experience. The rooms were a little dissapointing - tiny and overpriced. The bar/seating area was lacking in warmth or atmosphere. Apart from the restaurant staff, service in the rest of the hotel was indifferent. 5/5 for the restaurant, 3/5 for the Accomodation.

Disappointing chateau in a lovely area

The chateau exterior is impressive and the surrounding area is beautiful. However, we found the staff to be indifferent, the rooms to be small and lacking in character and the price of the room to be excessive for what it was. At €275 a night, we would expect to have a view, decent space, character, extra amenities. This hotel/chateau offers none of that. The restaurant was adequate and the quality/price was below average. (Meal price of €200-300 for two). The only redeeming quality was that Marcay is close to Chinon which is lovely. I would opt to stay in Chinon next time. There are lovely restaurants at very decent prices and some lovely looking hotels. Give Marcay a miss!

lacking management

The room was 'compact' and decidedly tired in parts. Outside, in the grounds there was need of some tidying and attention to detail, this was also reflected in the pool area, which was scruffy.
Our dinner was a complete let-down because, although we asked to dine at 8pm, and were present in very good time, we were neglected completely, and ended up being served main courses after 10.30pm.
I discreetly advised the 'apparent' manager, M Mollard, that I was unhappy, and would appreciate a word later on. He disappeared, and was not present the following morning either. Upon explaining that I would like to discuss matters with the manager before settling my account, 'reception' advised me that if I did not wish to pay, then their instructions were to call the police.
This was as ludicrous as it sounded and I subsequently wrote explaining my experience to Relais et Chateaux. Marcay is simply not worthy of their recommendation.

This hotel is simply amazing.
I booked for a week at very short notice based on the fact that this chateau is part of the Relais & Chateaux group - although I was slightly concerned about some of the posted comments, albeit dated 2006. I was travelling with my wife and 13 month old daughter.
It transpired that I had no reason to be disappointed. This is a luxurious hotel in a very tranquil setting, ideal for exploring the Touraine/Anjou-Saumur wine areas.
The chateau sits at the end of a long tree-lined drive, nestled amongst its own vineyards. The chateau has been wonderfully restored and the interiors are decorated to a high standard. The rear terraces have unrestricted panoramic views over the village of Marcay and the beautiful Loire countryside. The heated outdoor swiming pool is situated discreatly behind a low hedge and again has the most amazing views.
I stayed in a room in the west wing, which had the added bonus of having its own private garden area, ideal for my baby daughter.
The room was beautifully furnished and was large enough to accomodate a cot, provided by the hotel at no extra charge. The bathroom was large and well appointed.
The restaurant was very comfortable, the tables were spaced quite far apart, and the quality and choice of food and wine were second to none.
The hotel also provided a qualified baby sitter for a reasonable hourly rate - this service we found very useful and reliable and can recommend it.
The service was very efficient and the staff were attentive, friendly and helpful.
We will definitely return.
