My last trip to Bradford was in 1973 - say no more it's changed! I wanted to spend one night sampling the beer and having a curry on a budget. AA showed a CAMRA real ale recommended pub near the centre with rooms. What more could you ask for? Sat Nav took me round several derelict streets in what appeared to be the "red light" district of Bradford indeed my mianderings down dark back streets attracted the interest of several ladies of the night. I eventually pulled in to the backyard of the Beehive opposite the Bradford Irish Club with tricoloeur. Not promising - hire car threatened by bunch of scruffy looking alcoholics enjoying a smoke in the yard at the back. Friendly staff left me to find own room - not easy - advertised Ensuite with Sky TV - not to be - no SKY - no heating - shower didn't work. Spent one of the worse nights of my life - bar full of alcoholic gay Yorkshire men plus alcoholic lonely dossers - no atmosphere. Night capped with a ranting/raving maniac who tried to smash the walls in and attacked the staff - eventually removed by police at about 1.30 am - not recommended to anyone other than masochistic real ale afficianados looking for an overpriced cold, miserable night in Bradford - don't even bother to visit - there are more cheerful graveyards! Good curry though at Amans - unfortunately they are an alcohol free restaurant - excellent value for ?11.95 3 course eat as muc h as you want!

The pub itself is excellent - especially for devotees of good beer. The interior really attractive with what looks like authentic Edwardian decor. At ?40 for B & B it was reasonably priced. The staff were friendly and the pub filled with locals - always a good sign.
The room was clean and adequately furnished with en suite bathroom. Nothing spectacular but just what you'd expect in that price range. I could just hear the throb of music from the cellar bar downstairs but it didn't bother me. Rather atmospheric, in fact. It would only be a problem for those who are precious about silence!! My difficulty with the music was, as I had an early start, resisting the temptation to go down and join it.
Fine for a short stay. I was only there for one night and would have liked a second crack at the superb Black Sheep bitter!
