"My wife and I stayed at The Bear Hotel , havant, Hants. We stayed for 4 days and being well travelled people we feel that we are quite honest in our opinion. We have travelled alot of the world and can honestly say that the service we received was impeccable. The food that we had the privelage of eating..."

We were here for a wedding so really just wanted a place to crash in (thankfully!). Our room was freezing cold when we arrived and like previous people have commented, no hot water came out of the tap. We were told this was because the hot water had run out. The bathroom was dirty, as was the bedroom carpet. Bed was clean though. Throughout the next morning, still no hot water. Again, nothing coming out of the tap, it wasn't just cold. Breakfast wasn't great - in fairness the hotel were busy but it took 25 minutes for our order to be taken, and when it did arrive it was cold and overcooked (not sure how thats possible but it happened!) Some things e.g. toast did not arrive. Such a shame as the hotel always used to have an excellent reputation (I grew up in the area) and the staff are nice but unfortunately I didn't speak to one guest who didn't have an issue with their room or breakfast. I can't remember the room number but it was directly opposite the small staircase from reception. All in all, pretty awful unfortunately.

Weekend break taken at the Hotel on assumption Greene King the well known brewers would be a good recommendation. Oh dear not so. The hotel has been sadly neglected over many years. Staff were fine but they are fighting an uphill battle. Everything is worn beyond its useful life, tables sticky, chairs sag, carpets thread worn, paint faded. Few people eating in, pub end had few customers. Bathroom old with mould around the edges. Water would cut out completey or only cold water in shower. lots of sealant used around bath at various times. Signs that water leaks into bedroom near window. Gutters overgrown with moss and plant life. Smell of dampness in foyer and smell of stale food in dining room. On second night an altercation in the bar between two woman kept us entertained until the Police arrived. We must assume Greene King the owners have never visited this dreadful addition to their Hotel properties.

My girlfriend and I booked up at last minutes before reading the reviews on here. The night before we left I read the reviews on here and was worried. Our worries were gone once we arrived. The welcome we received was warm. We were in a twin room (no 33). We didn't see any thread bare carpet, apart from the 3rd or 4th step up the stars to the rooms. There was definetely no falling off wall paper as far as we could see. The place is an old english inn, it's not suppose to be like a London first class hotel. We were recommended by one of the staff to use the train to get to portsmouth instead of driving or getting a taxi. The station was only 5-10 min walk way from the hotel. The fair was ?3.60 return each which was a bargin. Only a couple of stops away as well to portsmouth harbour. There was a few issues with the place, but nothing that really spoilt our 3 day break. We spent two nights there when it was really hot. The room was unbearable really regarding the heat to sleep in, but a fan was already provided in the room. Air con would of been nice, but as I've already stated it's an old english inn. I wasn't keen on the English breakfast, and the food prices were a little pricey for evening meals, but there was a few other pubs around in the area which were cheap and had nice food. Or if you want to slum it, KFC, Burger King and MacDonalds were a small walk away. The pub called "Old House at Home" which you can find in South street (take right out of hotel, then first left) does very nice food at lunch time only. The place was perfect for us, out side portsmouth with easy access into portsmouth. Cheaper staying there than going right into portsmouth. My only really really bad comment, was there was no filter coffee with morning breakfast, but there was a costa coffee up the road. I would happily stay there again.

We were 15 blokes on a cricket tour of the area and being such do not expect the earth but the hotel was dirty, one of the bathrooms was flooded, wallpaper hanging off, carpets threadbear. We were promised that the bar would remaim open till midnight but were made very uncomfortable to order drinks past 11 30pm so we took our custom elsewhere in Havant. All in all has to be one of the worst we have been in since our club started touring in 1987!

My wife and I stayed in the Bear hotel for one night in January 2008 we found it in a state of terminal decline. We wrote to Greene King who advised us that they were taking action to improve the hotel as it is May and from the comments shown things have not improved. I would suggest that any dissatisfied customer write to Greene King head office and put their complaint in writing.
