Martin0 has stayed here and says:
"I stayed for a week in August. Considering the main strip in Cancun is quite wild Elan offered a peaceful and relaxing experience away from the crowds but close enough to the strip should you want to experience it. Arriving after a long flight and stop over we swept through big iron gates along an avenue..."

Resort needs better management, staff tried their best but...

The Elan Resort and Spa is a lovely resort . The staff was extremely accommodating but the management and the way things are represented on their website are lacking. Examples: front desk management weren't up-to-speed in hotel management and making sure the guests were taken care of especially with things that were promised. The food was amazing, the chefs did a great job but you are promised several dining options and find out there aren't any it is disappointing. There was never a buffet at dinner and there was only one option each night for dinner, not the choice of 6 restaurants that was indicated on their website. Bars were not open in the evenings as indicated, one night we actually were our own bartenders for the group of people that were staying at the resort as there was no bartender to be found after dinner (at 9:00 p.m.) There was no entertainment for the entire time we were there. They have 2 gym areas but only one was open and had limited equipment. They had problems with water and plumbing our entire stay, including having no water during some time periods along with strong smell of sewage in the rooms from the drains. We loved the resort itself it was like being in a small beautiful Mexican Village, the foliage was spectacular as were the fountains and pool areas. The bartenders, room maids and waiters were extremely helpful. If the Elan Resort and Spa wants to remain open they need to seriously address the lacking of managerial staff and work on the plumbing problems and the sewage odor that is in the guest rooms along with the dining options or change their website as it is extremely misleading.

Just returned from our stay at Elan. If anything the place is even more beautiful since those pics have been taken due to the growing vines and more mature vegetation. There was only a handful of other couples during our stay which at first felt eerie, but after you get over it you feel like the staff is there to only serve you, which made us feel like millionaires! The villa we stayed in was clean and beautiful. The porter staff was good at providing fresh clean towels daily which had the most warming and heavenly smell ever! Occasionally we were left a surprise swan or two with some petals on our bed! The first day we arrived there was no hot water, but a comment was made to the desk and was quickly fixed. The room had a DVD player but I would recommend bringing your own because their selection consisted of about 20, mostly in Spanish or from the 80's. We ventured outside of the resort to swim at a local beach to experience the Caribbean waters, only to realize that it was full of children and the water wasn't all that spectacular. We stayed about an hour and then happily went back to our resort. Only 3 restaurants were open during our stay, but after you taste the food it didn't matter all that much. The food was amazing and its presentation was like none I've ever seen. The wait staff was very friendly and offered a good explanation of all the dishes if you asked. Lookout for Tony he was our favorite! Juan was great as well and was always ready to whip up awesome drinks. Music was played by the pool which helped add to the feeling of their little Mexican town. The only downside was the mosquitoes. I couldn't go outside after sunset without getting at least 10 bites! They did provide mosquito repellent wipes, which I used along with the mosquito repellent/sunblock I brought along, but neither seemed to help. By our fourth night the indoor restaurant was opened. I would recommend the resort use some citronella candles at the outdoor tables instead of the regular candles they had. Also bring along some spray that is only repellent, maybe my mix of repellent/sunblock watered it down. Other than the bites our stay was phenomenal and we would definitely go back again!

Having read previous reviews about The Elan, I was looking forward to my whole holiday on Cancun. Cancun as a place is everything you expect of it, however, the Elan is not. During our stay we had 3 rooms, all smelt of sewage, the first room the toilet would not flush, the second room our neighbours, despite less than 20 people being in the hotel, were incredibly noisy, and with thin walls we could hear everything. Our third room still smelt and the balcony door would not lock, but we opted to stay as we were sick of moving. On at least three separate occasions throughout the stay the resort had no hot water for hours on end, although a cold shower can sometimes be pleasant after a hot day in the Mexican sun. The staff were very friendly throughout, but as the resort was very quiet, they were sometimes difficult to find, an all inclusive resort where you couldn't always get a drink by the pool as there were no staff around, and on at least three nights all bars were shut by ten o'clock on a night and you had to ask at reception to be allowed a drink, which could take 20 minutes to reach you. The mini fridge in our room although part of the all inclusive package was only restocked twice during our stay, and only when we asked for this to be done. The food on the whole was very good, but the resort and our travel agent reported a choice of seven restaurants. A maximum of two were open on any given day, with some days your 'choice' restricted to one restaurant. The website stated the resort had entertainment, and on one night out of 13 it did. The Elan was classified as 5 star but would be roughly a 3 star in my opinion. The staff on the whole were very friendly and helpful, with some exceptions, and I know other guests had serious problems with hotel staff. At one point a senior staff member was overheard saying to another guest that the hotel was renovating and not really ready for guests! We were informed by another senior employee that we should contact our travel agents and ask for a reimbursement. The resort is very quiet and if you are looking to escape the world in a 3 star environment with friendly staff and on the whole good food you will enjoy this place. However we were expecting so much more from a 5 star Cancun resort and were left disappointed.

I stayed a few days at the Elan Resort with my boyfriend and our stay was more then enjoyable! The staff was very friendly and helpul, and the food at the restaurants, very tasty. If you want a quiet and romantic stay, don't hesitate to stay at the Elan Resort, we are french and after we visited Acapulco, Mexico City and Cancun, we prefered Cancun and of course Elan.
