I picked this place because I thought the location was great (on the water) and the price for a four star property. In the end, I was a bit disappointed and should have heeded the reports on this website more closely (it gets mixed reviews). All wasn't lost, however. The good: I enjoyed the breakfast, and our room was large with a spacious (but totally unsafe for small children) balcany overlooking the harbor. The location was pretty good -- around the corner from all of the action and sites. The bad: the carpet is old and musty, the rooms definitely need freshing up. There was a huge renovation going on in front of the hotel that they, of course, failed to mention, so there was a lot of construction noise and debris. As far as cleanliness and comfort, it felt very "3 star". Really, 3 and 4 star is only a checklist. For example, if it has hair dryers or not, and has nothing to do w/ the quality. In this case, I felt burned. We paid extra for four star, but have certainly stayed at nicer 3 stars. Staff in the breakfast room were friendly, reception was average.

Abbiamo prenotato allo Starhotel Savoia Excelsior in quanto è classificato 4 stelle nel prezzo. Trieste non ha lo stesso mercato turistico di altre città italiane quindi i prezzi sono molto più bassi. Gli hotel europei vengono classificati per le strutture che offrono, non secondo il giudizio soggettivo delle persone. L'Excelsior offre strutture ma non ha per niente fascino. Eravamo all'ultimo piano sul retro e la temperatura era abbastanza elevata fuori. L'aria condizionata non veniva accesa fino a maggio quindi la camera diventava subito un forno. Inoltre c'era una discoteca in fondo alla strada e la musica veniva tenuta alta fino a notte fonda. L'hotel dichiara di avere a disposizione l'accesso a internet in camera ma in realtà si è scoperto che c'è un solo computer disponibile nell'atrio. Il personale era al massimo civile e l'arredamento della camera era piuttosto datato. La posizione dell'hotel è abbastanza comoda, ma credo che cercherò un altra sistemazione alla mia prossima visita di Trieste. L'Excelsior non è niente di memoribile.

We booked at the Starhotel Savoia Excelsior because of the 4-star rating at the price. Trieste doesn't get the tourist business of other Italian cities, so the rates are much lower there. European hotels are rated by the amenities they offer, not a subjective judgment by others. The Excelsior had the amenities, but no charm at all. We were on the top floor at the back, and the temperature got pretty high outside. The A/C doesn't get turned on until May so the room got pretty toasty. Also, there was a dance club up the street and the music stayed loud well into the night. The hotel claimed it had in-room internet access, but it turned out to have a single computer in the lobby for that purpose. The staff was civil at best, and the room decor is certainly dated. The hotel's location is convenient enough, but I would try another hotel on any subsequent trip to Trieste. There is nothing memorable about the Excelsior.

A gorgeous location, facing the Adriatic with a view of the Audace mole. A staff that goes far out if it’s way to make you forget the location and wish you’d booked somewhere else. Reasonably sized rooms, often clean. A good breakfast. If you’re lucky enough to get a front room, with a balcony, it’s probably worth it. Otherwise...

La posizione è stupenda, di fronte all'Adriatico con vista sul molo Audace. Il personale fa di tutto per farti dimenticare la posizione e desiderare di aver prenotato da un'altra parte. Le camere hanno buone dimensioni e spesso sono pulite. La colazione è buona. Se siete abbastanza fortunati da avere una camera sul davanti con balcone probabilmente ne vale la pena, altrimenti...
