My husband just completed a 3-day stay in this hotel while visiting our daughter who is attending the University there. This hotel was a random choice, but we couldn't have been more pleased. The location was perfect for everything we wanted to do...and we were fortunate to have a room overlooking the Square. It reminded me of a New York boutique hotel in the middle of a fairy-tale backdrop...
The beds were very comfortable, but as we saw in other hotel choices, there were two twins pushed together to make one queen size. Bed linens were of high quality and room cleanliness was above average.
Overall, I would recommend this hotel to anyone travelling to this area!!

Stayed four nights at the end of May. This was my second visit to the hotel; the first some five years ago. At that time the hotel was new and breakfast was regularly taken amongst the Roman ruins on the lower level. This (breakfast is now in the lobby) plus the reconfiguration of the lobby / restaurant were the main changes.
What remains the same are chic, comfortable, spacious rooms with hardwood floors and marble baths, friendly, attentive staff and hearty, fresh breakfasts.
I arrived early and, because my room was not ready, set my luggage aside. Upon checking in at 14:00, I was shown to a standard room on the side of the hotel. I had booked a deluxe room overlooking the square via the internet and returned to reception to resolve. The staff there quickly took one look at my reservation and directed me to a deluxe room as reserved.
From what I discovered no hotel in Maastricht has a better, more central location. Literally dozens of cafes and restaurants surround the hotel, trendy shopping immediately to the right, antique shops to the left and the main square (and internet cafe) straight ahead out of the hotel door.
My thanks to the hotel for a pleasant, stress-free stay. I will return.

Trying too hard to be cool

A hotel so cool, it was almost cold. My wife and I just go back from a rainy couple of days in Maastricht, staying in the Hotel Derlon. The hotel is superbly located in the centre of the old traffic free town centre, with great access to Maastricht's excellent clothes, shoes and lifestyle shops. Sadly, because of the rain, we didn't make it out of the shopping area this time, so left with more complete wardrobes and less complete credit cards.
The Onze Lieve Vrouwplein was buzzing when we arrived, with live music from one of the bars and the green neon glow from the hotel windows calling to us from across the square. Everything looked good. But sadly, despite great looks, valet parking and excellent rooms (lovely hardwood floors, cool art, average bathroom and shower) the sophistication of the look was not matched by service in the hotel, bar or restaurant. It wasn't so much bad, as just a little disinterested - you were just another guest over a busy weekend.
And it all felt rather claustrophobic. The bar doubles as the lobby, reception and restaurant, giving the reception too crowded a feel. The restaurant feels like a lobby with people coming in off the street. And much vaunted museum and ruins amongst which you enjoy a rather ordinary breakfast can't disguise the fact that this is a windowless cellar. Oh, and they didn't quite have that eye for detail which means they failed the radio test. Yes, they have a TV in the room, yes they have a CD and a radio, but doesn't the radio work? Of course not, it's impossible to get any station well.
So overall, a good location in an interesting town, but Derlon you are really trying too hard. If you come to see Maastricht and want an average hotel stay here, but if you wanting something really special that makes the hotel part of the experience give this one a miss.

My wife and I just got back from an Easter weekend escape to Maastricht, and had a terrific stay at the Derlon. The location could not be better, rooms are great, and most of all the staff is professional, accomodating, and seem to really enjoy working at the Derlon. You can't fake the last point, and it reflects in the welcome, food, and service. We were on the Pronkstraat side and it was not too loud, though I would expect on Summer's nights there will be sounds of revelry whether on the Plein or the street side. Breakfast is a little pricey but the food is very high quality and the museum setting is truly special. Highly recommended, a jewel of a hotel.
