Would be wonderful any other time...

I think this hotel would be wonderful any other time, except, of course, the time when we stayed there. We booked (and paid) in advance and showed up to find the otherwise cozy, quaint hotel doused in stench and with blighted views. Unknown to us, the adjacent canal was undergoing dredging during our stay. Instead of a cute Venetian canal, there were dredging machinery, dams, plywood, fencing and mud, which smelled so awful I had to cover my nose and mouth while walking up to and away from the lobby. The hotel staff was friendly and helpful and the room we ended up staying in (we asked to be moved to a room further away from the stench) was comfortable. However, had we known there would be dredging of the canal and the resulting smells and horrible views, we would have gladly stayed elsewhere.
If you are considering booking a room there this summer, I highly suggest you contact the hotel in advance and ask when/if the dredging is finished and the canal put back in order.

We arrived rather exhausted at Ca' d'Oro after a hectic two week trip around the Balkans, and were delighted with it. Large bathroom with an excellent bath, comfortable beds, and a good breakfast for an Italian hotel of this type -- much better than some I've experienced in the past.
The staff were helpful and friendly throughout our three-day stay, the room was kept impeccably clean, and frankly the location can't be beaten in Venice -- a little off the tourist trail but still only a ten-minute stroll to the Rialto Bridge, but with the added benefit of local restaurants, shops and markets that aren't catering to great hordes of tourists.
Highly recommended hotel.

South/East Canareggio is definitely the best area in the 'main' part of Venice to stay, and this hotel was well located off the very main streets but with all sights etc very accessible. Hotel was only average, breakfasts poor and limited, and one of the receptionists was unhelpful when asked to help us with booking trips etc.
