Having just returned from the Algarve, staying at the Tivoli Lagos I feel I must alter my critic of this Hotel from my last stay.
We have been to the Tivoli four times, and we said the year before last that was the last time we would go back..
The hotel had been going downhill every year, but what a surprise we had this year. The hotel has change dramatically, much cleaner, the staff more friendly and the service was excellent.
It seems the management has changed in the last year and that has made the difference, Also the Duna beach club has gone through the same change for the better, no longer are you charged for the sun beds on the beach if you are a guest of the Hotel, but if you take the ones by the bar it will cost you ten Euro. The service and cleanliness at Duna is superb, but comes at a price, the drinks are hotel price (?4.50c for a beer).
You no longer have to wait for hours to get served at the hotel pool bar either, staff have been increased from not just one or two but to four or five waiters.
The most important was the reception staff, no longer the long face and unhelpful service, now a smile and very professional, and very friendly.
The smoking ban has come in Portugal, but not as draconian as in the UK and other countries. There are bars in which you can smoke If they have the improved ventilation, you just have to look for them, (yes I do).
All in all a very pleasant stay we will be back. Well done the new general manager.

We stayed at the Tivoli for a week and on the whole the reception, restaurants, bar and pool areas cannot be faulted - it is a very clean hotel in these areas. However various members of our party complained on different days about a sewage smell in their bedrooms - we certainly noticed it on the last 3-4 days...it did not go away when the room was cleaned. Also, the water that came out of the shower, batth and sink was brown...these two incidents made me worry as you can imagine!
Also, not sure if the hotel had assigned similar keys to rooms but our friends were welcomed at 6.30am by a strange man who had got into their room - luckily the chain was on the door but the reception staff were not able to tell us how this had happened.
Good hotel...they need to pay attention to detail though to keep their 4 star status...

This Hotel breaks the standard bland concrete ribbon approach of much of the Mediteranean package destinations. We last stayed at the Tivoli twenty two years ago when it was already long established and called just the Lagos Hotel and we had a two year old to entertain. We very much enjoyed our stay that time as the hotel is ideal for families.
The design is interesting centre'd on the outside pool with lots of great public spaces through being built on a hillside offering the interest of changing levels and turns inside and out to explore. The position in the town offers all the convenience of that for evening strolls with the Beach Club and its courtesy direct short bus ride service adding the convenience of not only a further pool but excellent seaside dining and the most marvelous beach.
Returning for our 1st childless holiday in twenty five years and as busy professionals wanting just to switch off and relax. The Tivoli has changed little other than the name, scrupulously clean, nice well appointed rooms (love the pink marble) varied dining choice, FREE! Internet access. Highly recommended although I can see with the increasing success of the Marina and the Tivoli's unique position that it may eventually move outside my reach.
If I have a criticism it is that the gardens and turtle cascade/pond are not as well maintained as might be

Stayed in the Tivoli Hotel with my grown up family and loved it. I booked the hotel independently through Hotelopia and wasn't disappointed. We stayed bed and breakfast as there are lots of great restaurants in the neighbourhood. If booking ask for a pool view as some of the rooms face onto surrounding roads and may be noisy. Hotel was spotless and staff were very friendly.

This was our third stay at this hotel having stayed there previously in 1996 & 2002. We found the rooms and public areas to be spotlessly clean and all the staff very helpful and efficient. The beach club (reached by the free hotel bus) is very good, you can either pay a small fee to sit by the pool or it's free to use their beach sun loungers. Whilst the food at the beach club is excellent we found the range of lunchtime snacks very limited with regard to choice. Not everybody wants a big meal at lunchtime. The lunchtime snacks in the main hotel offer a much wider choice.
The location of the hotel is excellent but if you don't like walking 0.75 miles along the main river promenade to the main resort then maybe this hotel isn't for you. A quicker way into the centre of Lagos is to turn right out of the hotel and walk up the steep hill and down the other side directly into the main centre. There are several smaller bars and restaurants nearer the hotel so you don't always need to walk into the main resort if you don't want to eat or drink in the hotel. The hotel is made up of several blocks so it's a bit rambling. There are quite a lot of steps to certain rooms and the short steep uphill cobbled road to the hotel would not be good for the less mobile. Some parts of the hotel overlook the road so some rooms don't have a great view.
There is a good choice of food for breakfast and the hotel has 3 restaurants for evening meals. I agree with some other reviewers, Lagos is no longer as cheap as it was, we found drinks were especially expensive, particularly in the hotel.
Lagos now has fast access from Faro airport (1hr travelling time) via the newly opened motorway but beware, some holiday companies (we booked with Thomson) still trail tourists along the old coast road dropping people off at several resorts so the transfers still take at least 2hrs!
The hotel has a large car park which makes car hire ideal. If you do hire a car be sure to get down to Cape St Vincent and visit some of the most fantastic beaches on the Atlantic coast. Bordeira, Monte Cl?rigo and Amado are the best. Caf?s around the Amado area are sparse (especially on Mondays!) but Monte Cl?rigo has several eateries. Of course being on the Atlantic coast the temperature is somewhat cooler than in Lagos so these beaches aren't for sunbathing, they are more for walkers and surfers.
Overall this is a good 4* hotel and we would have no hesitation in staying here when next we visit Lagos.
