An impossible task? This hotel managed it!
We booked an anniversary overnight because of the imposing photographs of the place but were delighted to find that it had substance as well as style.
Our welcome at reception was like being welcomed home - something I value wherever I go - and the service we found in the rest of the hotel was similarly warm. It's easy to be polite and efficient if one tries hard enough, and although all the members of staff we spoke to were just that, it is harder to be so genuinely welcoming and I'd like to think we made some friends here.
Our room was comfortable and clean and we were pleasantly surprised to be met in the hallway by a smiley Red Setter. We'll be bringing our cats next time!
We had booked dinner, bed and breakfast which is something I normally avoid but the sample menu looked reasonable so I thought we'd take a chance. I was delighted with a particularly flavoursome steak but what really impressed me was the kitchen's success in placating a ticking hormonal timebomb - and a vegetarian one to boot. She was happy witha wild mushroom risotto and even allowed me to order wine.
All-in-all we were very happy with the service, accommodation and food and we will definitely be back.
And hopefully so too will Rusty!

Disappointing. Arrived without a booking but there was space. Lovely building, good and friendly staff, but the place was tired and not worth the amount we paid despite being discounted when we hesitated - allowed our dog to stay though which was a real bonus.
But - very tired room and interior in general. Lots of minor faults - door not fitting in the frame properly and letting in too much light from the corridor, ITV not available on the TV, rather dingy bathroom, small double bed, tired paintwork etc....
The evening meal was dire! Don't eat in, but the breakfast was very good, but it is hard to get these wrong. The bar area is large but gloomy and very dated, but the dining room was lovely, but also could do with a make over - drab colours. The garden was nice, but could do with some flowers and colour.
All in all, not worth what we paid at all (?80). Even ?50 would have been too much. Avoid at the moment, but if done up and really modernised this could be a real find. What Moffat really needs is a good place to eat in the evening and this could be at the BW, but not while they serve a meal as poor as the one we had.

Stayed at this hotel a number of times on business. It has been under new management for the last 6 months and what a difference the management makes! Friendly and helpful staff. Nice clean rooms, excellent food. Highly recommended.

We just spent a winter weekend break at Moffat House Hotel. The hotel and rooms have character and are cosy and clean. The staff are pleasant and very helpful. The full Scottish breakfast was brilliant. There was a cosy fire burning in the lounge to sit near and have a quiet relaxing drink. If you are looking for a quiet relaxing break, this is highly recommended.
