Beautifully remodeled complex of farm-community buildings and nicely, but simply, landscaped grounds have resulted in a perfect little resort. We stayed in one of the apartments and were pleased with the ample space (by European standards), the high quality of the remodeling work and the good working condition of everything. The decor was simple but completely clean, neat and comfortable. I got a quick look at one of the twelve hotel rooms and found that it matched the quality of our apartment. The front desk staff - were friendly, helpful, and enjoyable to chat with. We visited a bit after swimming pool season, but the pool area looks like it would be a spectacular place to enjoy a summer day. Food/Restaurant: The formal restaurant cooked up two delicious dinners for us. By rural Tuscany standards it was a bit formal and a bit expensive. But worth it for a couple of nights during your stay. The tavern was only open for breakfast while we were there. Perhaps because it was late in the season. But those buffet breakfasts were wonderful Tuscan country spreads. A few small caveats: 1) Despite appearances on a map, it is a serious walk up to Cortona. It would be pretty tough on a bicycle. It looks to me like a 1000 to 1500 foot elevation change over maybe a 2 mile hike. No walking out to dinner. 2) The buildings are somewhat close to a fairly busy road. Sleeping with windows open (not when we were there!) would probably make that road seem very close. 3) These old stone buildings, as beautiful as they are, have few and small windows. We found interior lights necessary at all times of day. All in all it was a wonderful place where we would eagerly stay again.

The wife and i booked the Borgo as our second stop in Tuscany ( and many more there will be )after spending few days at the Villa Marta near Lucca first week of August......and once again we were not disappointed ...The Borgo is located at the foot hill of Cortona which is just 4 Km up an amazing scenic route ,overlooking the whole of Valdichiana and frankly breathtaking especially at night time. The only negative point ...but not really that negative as you 'll soon get used to it is that The Borgo is just off a very busy provincial road and the rumbling of the railway traffic not too far away can be heard quite well and the costant stream of traffic only seem to be calming down at night time ..bear in mind that we were there in August so pretty much busy season but ......somehow within few hours of being there all seem to be disappearing , you will soon start enjoy the rather spacious and well furnished rooms( as long as you book superiors ones as the standards are pretty small and located next to the reception overlooking ...well...nothing really! ) the rather well manicured ground and the fantastic pool area which is really the main focus .The pool is heated ( in August ??? ) and there are plenty of deck chairs and umbrella available and although it may get busy as there are a lot of families( il Borgo has also appartment s,which are rather stunning ) there never seem to be a problem to find the right spot admiring Cortona further up on the hills. There is a restaurant and a bar serving food i guess mainly at dinner time and again it will need to be booked in the morning( ....i really struggle to think about dinner at 10 am......) We ate once and we found the food to be of a good standard but there seem to be a tendency towards north european style of food which is not what you really want in Tuscany ( i found out the chef was German..so kind of explain ..)..never than less you won't be disappointed by the breakfast either as it is truly of a commendable quality and the choice is vast including some very good local produce. The hotel staff are very professional and extremely helpful and reccomandations and booking are made without a problem...Could it be that speaking italian my help a bit ..as we tend to be suggested some rather good restaurants and well off the tourist trail. Cortona itself is well worth more than one visit and having a car is a real bonus as the cabs ride ( very difficult to find ) can prove to be very expensive and local transport is a bit patchy.... The wine routes are a bit too far away and Arezzo is the nearest large town .Perhaps il Borgo is not best placed if you have a stereotype tuscany in mind but undoubtedly is well worth few days stay as it is extremely good value...

Beautiful grounds...but...
Average rating: guest rating 4.5

The grounds are beautiful. The apartments are spacious and relatively comfortable...but ...the beds are not unlike slabs of concrete. We had one meal with good sevice and food up to expectations...but... we had one meal that was poorly served and the food was of extremely poor quality and taste. This was supposedly attributed to a new cook replacing one who had a broken arm...but... the management agreed not to charge for the meal....but...they did charge!!! Another group, not with our party, suffered the same fate. The desk personnel were helpful and friendly...but... asking for "normal" service type items, such as an additional roll of toilet paper seemed to be beyond what the villa was supposed to supply. There were also some difficulties regarding charging meals and services to the correct room or apartment. Beware of $100 cleaning charge for the apartments...but...then, again, they do supply fresh sheets and towels on Wednesdays. Again, beautiful grounds in a beautiful area...but...not a place I would recommend.
